Just like anyone – seeing someone who feels like me in a book is a magical experience and one that every person should have. We read A LOT and whenever there is a special character who is vegan or vegetarian, we rejoice. There are many characters that we don’t know what they eat – think about how many books don’t have meal scenes; maybe lots of those characters are eating plant-based food but here are some we know of and love (plus we highly recommend these books!)

Monty Montero – Jennifer Cervantes
Shadow Bruja Duology
Monty is a spunky character who aspires to be a full Jaguar warrior. She is proud of her vegetarianism and refers to it occasionally , along with her fierce love of animals.
She’s awesome!!!! As an Aztec hunter, she refuses to hunt or harm animals.

Grover Underwood – Rick Riordan
Grover is a recurring character in the Percy Jackson universe – he is present in the original Percy Jackson series (as one of the main trio of heroes), and appears in The Heroes of Olympus, and Trials of Apollo. Grover is a satyr and cares deeply about Nature.
Keeper of the Lost Cities – Shannon Messenger
So far, this is a 9-book series (with a bonus book) and more forthcoming (we really, really, really hope!)
All elves (the main characters) are vegetarian
Shannon Messenger even describes some of the amazing elven food – from starkflower stew to ripplefluffs (a dessert)…
Piper McLean – Rick Riordan
Heroes of Olympus (5 book series)
Trials of Apollo (5 book series)
According to the author, Piper is based on a former student of his who was inspired to become vegetarian after becoming aware of factory farming.
Duane the polar bear– Dan bear–El
The very, very, far north (2 book series)
Duane is a remarkable bear; very caring, loyal to his friends and he derives pleasure from simple things. Unlike polar bears in the wild, Duane eats a diet of berries, icicles and snow delights (ice plus berries, basically).
The Tales of Limindoor woods– Sieglinde de Francesca
All the gnomes are vegetarian and recipes are provided in each book for treats such as honey buns, Yummy Pear Cobbler, etc.)
Note that the recipes are vegetarian but not vegan, often containing dairy and eggs. They could be modified.
The gnomes eat seed cake, blueberries, and other natural things.
If you know any amazing fictional vegan or vegetarian characters, please share in the comment section - we are always excited to discover new books!
It was really interesting to read this post. In all the books I've read, I really never paid close attention to what any of the characters ate--aside from Hobbits, who are fond of "second breakfasts" (though I never paid attention to the actual food that made up their breakfasts). It is really cool and inspiring to look at book characters from this perspective. Thanks for raising my awareness and giving me a new way to look at things!
I love going deeper into things that are important to me and I appreciate that you are raising my consciousness around fictional vegan and vegetarian characters. I stumbled upon this author's website and list of her favorites. She appears to be a kindred spirit - check out her site:
