This book, sweetly illustrated, gives voice to many animals that you may love to learn about. Cassowaries, pigs, hyenas, gorillas, Sy Montgomery has seen them all! What I like about this book is that, basically, it tells people about animals but also it teaches people that all animals have value.
A quote from Sy, "I'd heard it all before. Hyenas are ugly. Hyenas are lazy. Hyenas are thieves. They steal food from lions. Everyone said so - even The Lion King! Then I visited a hyena den.
The fluffy cubs wrestled like playing puppies. Mothers tenderly licked their babies. And they weren't stealing food from lions - more often, lions stole food from them.
Hyenas reminded me that what everyone says is not always true."
Sy Montgomery has learned from incredible creatures and we have enjoyed many of her other books. This book is a lovely introduction to her life, but more importantly to the idea of us learning from and loving our animal friends.
What animal have you learned from? Maybe a beloved pet, or a bird outside your window? We love listening to and watching the doves that land on our windowsill and from them we have learned stillness.
What a cool book! Before reading this, I also thought hyenas were the "bad guys", but I can't believe they're pretty much the opposite. I'm definitely getting this book and sharing with my niece and nephew! :)
This sounds like a great book. I loved hearing what Sy Montgomery had to say about Hyenas. One animal that I love and have learned from is the seal. Seals have taught me so much about playfulness and joy, and I want to create more of those qualities in my life, always!
