Animal Heroes

I love learning about interesting people - from famous people you probably know (Rosa Parks, Cleopatra, George Washington and more), but I am really inspired by animal heroes.

Here are a few people that I wanted to introduce to you!

David Attenborough (b. 1926) Still working today, Sir David has done amazing things to help animals and raise awareness around the world. Check out his books, documentaries and more. Here's a short clip of him with a sloth! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ndMKTnSRsKM

Dian Fossey (1932-1985)

Zoologist who studied gorillas in the wild, in Rwanda. Fossey became the world expert on mountain gorillas, fought poaching and was just amazing.

George Schaller (b. 1933)

Unlike Dian Fossey and Jane Goodall, who focused on one specific animal and helped the world learn about that special creature, George Schaller has travelled the world, learning and helping others learn about many creatures, habitats and conservation.

Jane Goodall (b. 1934)

We LOVE Jane Goodall - she just turned 90 and is as inspiring as ever! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6LOdNNwV3lg

If you don't know about Jane Goodall, there are many amazing biographies. One of our favorites is I am Jane Goodall by Brad Meltzer, illustrated by Christopher Eliopoulos (the whole series of biographies is great). Jane is one of my heroes and role models - I hope to meet her someday!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Biruté Mary Galdikas (b. 1946)

Orangutans! Yes, please. https://orangutan.org/

For over 40 years, Dr. Galdikas has studied, worked with orangutans in Borneo. She is a conservationist, educator and scientist.

Michael Werikhe (1956-1999) - "Rhino Man of Kenya"

If you have read other blog posts (thank you!) you know that I like rhinos, so I HAD to include Michael who has done so much to raise awareness and funds for rhino conservation.

Steve Irwin (1962-2006)

He put the "WILD" in wild animal conservation. Famous for his interactions with "dangerous" animals, what I love is that he was passionate about conservation and loved ALL animals.

Dawn Prince-Hughes (b. 1964)

Author, Primatologist and advocate for gorillas.

Jamal Galves (b. 1987)

Manatee Man

He has dedicated his work to conserving and helping the Antillean manatee.

These are such inspiring people. I clicked on a few of the videos, and they are really interesting. I loved seeing David Attenborough interact with the sloth, that was really cute!
